Groups of 4 - 6 children in a fun group lesson.
This page aims to inform you as much as possible about the keyboard program. Please feel free to call me or e-mail me at any stage if you have further questions.
Philosophy of the program:
I am very passionate about bringing the benefits of early music education to as many children as possible. As a primary school music teacher, parents often come to me with requests for their first year children to learn an instrument. However, most children of this age will benefit more from fun, socially orientated learning than from formal one-on-one lessons which require a half hour of focused concentration.
This class aims to be less formal, to provide variety of activity and to encourage solo work as well as ensemble work. The social nature of the class will be of great benefit at this stage. Children love to share their achievements with each other and they will gradually gain performance confidence as they play in a group or on their own.
Aims of the Program:
Each child will be different, and will develop and improve at a different pace. However, the program will aim to develop the following:
· Correct hand position and sitting position at keyboard (same for piano technique)
· Reading of traditional music notation.
· Aural perception- to listen to pitch and rhythms with understanding.
· Ensemble work - to play in a group either in unison or playing different parts at the same time.
· Solo work – to learn how to play songs fluently, using left and right hands.
Length of Program:
This program will set up a child to be ready to take on an instrument of choice such as piano or a stringed instrument and will be a good choice for about a year.
Homework:
I will be sending home materials such as the keyboard songs and words that we learn in class, visual materials that will help with the reading of notation and occasionally,
CDs to listen to and for playing along with.
If your child has access to a keyboard at home, this will be of benefit, but is not a necessity to begin with. *
I want to stress that it is really important to build up a love for music and practice should be an enjoyable event for children at this age.
*If you would like a keyboard for practice purposes at any stage but are not ready to buy one, I may be able to provide one for a small hire price. Please don’t hesitate to ask me.
